Zeeman Effect in Mercury
نویسنده
چکیده
Michael Faraday first examined atomic spectra under the influence of a magnetic field in 1862 without much success. It would prove to be his final experimental attempt. Upon discovery of this fact, Pieter Zeeman again attempted the procedure in 1896, and was led to the startling conclusion that spectral lines seemed to split into multiple components in the presence of a magnetic field. Known as the Zeeman effect, this phenomenon predicted the existence of the electron before a theory of it was first published a year later. Zeeman went on to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1902 for his work. The effect that is his namesake has a natural quantum mechanical description and is easily observable with modern equipment. In this paper, we describe and verify this in mercury.

1. Draw a diagram that shows the effect of a weak magnetic field on the otherwise degenerate substates involved in the transitions which produce the green line (5460.7 Å) and the yellow doublet (5769.6 Å and 5790.7 Å) of mercury. (See Melissinos (1966) [1], page 334 but beware of the error in the structure diagram for the 5790.7 Å line!) Note that there is another mercury yellow line at 5789.7 ...

متن کاملThe Zeeman and Hyperfine Splittings of Mercury Emission Spectra
The Zeeman and hyperfine splittings of the emission spectra from mercury vapor lamps are investigated through the use of a Fabry-Perot interferometer. In the absence of a magnetic field, a low-intensity peak near the major 5461 Å emission line can be observed; this yields a hyperfine shift of frequency 12.70 ± 0.19 GHz, consistent with the bHg emission shift of 12.21 GHz. In the presence of dif...
متن کاملThe Zeeman Effect
When gaseous mercury is subjected to an electrical discharge, such as in a fluorescent light bulb, street lamp, or laboratory discharge tube, the collisions between the mercury atoms and the electrons are energetic enough to excite one of the 6s electrons to a higher energy state, while the remaining 79 electrons (including the other 6s electron) remain undisturbed. Depending upon which empty s...
متن کاملThe Zeeman Effect in Hydrogen and Alkali Atoms
The Zeeman effect concerns the interaction of atomic systems with external magnetic fields. A basic understanding of the Zeeman effect is needed for many aspects of modern research in atomic physics. In addition, the Zeeman effect played an important historical role in the development of quantum mechanics, leading to the discovery of spin, the g-factor of the electron, and the Thomas precession...
